Ben Shelton stunned at Wimbledon with 1st-round loss to Finnish qualifier

The grass hasn't been kind. Fourth-seeded Ben Shelton — one of the most explosive servers and ball-strikers in the game — was bounced in the first round at Wimbledon by Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen, dropping a 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(9) decision that stings as much as any loss can.

Virtanen gutted out two tight tiebreaks and kept Shelton's big forehand from taking over the match, which is no small feat. Losing that second-set breaker 10-8 and then letting the fourth slip away 11-9 tells the story — Ben had chances to wrestle this one back and couldn't close it out when it mattered most.

As a four seed, Shelton had a real path deep into the draw, and that opportunity is gone before the tournament even gets started.
